Solomon’s Island is unusual in having no mains connections at all.
It is self sufficient with a 4.3kW array of photovoltaic solar panels providing for its electrical needs and a bore hole for its own untreated water supply. Guests are advised to drink bottled water.

Most solar systems give power to the National Grid during the day, and take from the grid at night. As the cottage is one of the few remaining ‘off-grid’ properties, our solar system has a large battery bank to store the power created during the daylight hours, for the evening and night time use.

Our solar system was installed by the Cornish firm Plug into the Sun and consists of 26 x 165W PV panels, producing a 4.3kW peak.

The panels feed power through a system inverter into the batteries, from where it then supplies all the energy needs of the house. In the course of a year the panels should produce around 3732 kW hours, making a Carbon Dioxide saving of 1604 kg/year – or about 48 Tonnes over their 30 year lifespan.

All normal electrical appliances can be used, although no fan heaters please!
